TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation is a technique used in physiotherapy to manage certain acute and chronic painful conditions.
It involves the application of small electrical impulses to the skin, which act on nerve fibres to reduce the perception of pain. According to the “gate control” theory, the analgesic effect is attributed to the inhibition of nerve afferents involved in pain transmission.
TENS treatment is particularly indicated for painful conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine with painful muscle spasms in the paravertebral muscles.
