SPORT MEDICINE

SPORT MEDICINE

Sports Medicine addresses healthcare issues across various sectors in order to meet the demands for "well-being" and "efficiency" of individuals, going beyond the usual request for certification of competitive or non-competitive fitness.

Therefore, the Specialist in Sports Medicine:

  • Works in the fields of cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, orthopaedics/traumatology, and pneumology to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate the most common conditions affecting athletes (professional competitors, non-professional competitors, non-competitive athletes, or amateurs).
  • Guides athletes of all levels during recovery after health events, acting as a liaison with specialists from other fields or directly managing the medical issues.
  • Shares professional expertise, even in the geriatric field, by participating in the organisation of physical activities aimed at managing underlying conditions (therapeutic exercise) and monitoring the response to the proposed exercise programme.
  • Assesses individual "athletic" characteristics through a series of clinical and instrumental investigations, as specific as possible to the individual’s needs (e.g., a sedentary person wanting to start a regular fitness programme or a regular athlete wanting to optimise their training).
  • Conducts a global postural assessment as well as studies the sport-specific ergonomics, based on the analysis of the athletic movement and the correct use of equipment in sports practice.
  • Directs athletes towards instrumental therapies (e.g., laser therapy, radar therapy, tecar therapy, shockwaves, etc.) and towards machines for isotonic exercises and cardio fitness (e.g., stationary bicycles, treadmills, arm ergometers, steppers, etc.).
  • Collaborates with Rehabilitation Therapists and Graduates/Degrees in Motor Sciences, forming an important point of reference for sports clubs in the management of the "athlete-patient" and/or the athlete who must return to their specific sport practice.
